The old plum tree is blossoming.
From my window—a view of white and green,
sunshine and a blue sky.
Everything is bursting
with the energy of spring,
touched by the particular magic
of this city's slow blossoming season.

Last winter there were branches that broke,
dry and sawdust-filled at the center.
One fell into the surly neighbour's yard
and he tossed it back over the fence.

But now, the old plum tree is blossoming.
First, light green leaves bud;
then the white blossoms begin.
I hope I will always keep on longing
for this renewal, for the promise-filled scent
of the plum tree in bloom.
