Clouds of Becoming

There is another cosmogony, or account of the creation,
according to which Earth, Erebus and Love were the first
of beings. Love (Eros) issued from the egg of Night, which
floated on Chaos. By his arrows and torches he pierced and
vivified all things, producing life and joy.

My father loved me when he
entered my mother. His passion
fertilized my conception.
It was love that drove him
to pursue desire.
Love engendered my birth.

I arrived into the world,
after a short labour
and only nine months' wait.
Eros was there, at my beginning,
when my parents made love together.
They wanted a girl child
to keep my brother company.

Yes, love forced me into being.
Love began my infant heart
beating each measurable pulse
so that my heart speaks
"love—love—love."
Nothing divine, except the spark
of God in me: my life
a mortal one, entirely human.

Nevertheless, it is love has led me
down each garden path;
love has whispered inspiration
into my inner ear, birthed each poem
I've written. Love conceived
both children that I bore;
love joined me in union
with every lover, husband, friend.

The only wisdom we need
is to know that love
makes the world go around.
Love sets our hearts in motion.
Love brings us into existence.
Here is a simple way to live—
decide that during your
indeterminate time
here upon earth—
make love your only mission:
eros or thanatos. Take a stand
for love, as death
will come sooner or later
without any choice.
